Cassandra Clare Books // Rant

Cassandra Clare

Hello and welcome to, what I imagine will be, a controversial post. Today's post will be about Cassandra Clare, her books and why I will no longer be buying or reading them.

When I first started watching Booktube, one of the first authors recommended to me was Cassandra Clare. Everyone I watched, had all of her books in shiny, hardback editions and everyone raved about the Shadowhunter world and how amazing it was. Being new and wanting to catch up with everyone, I went out and bought the entire Mortal Instruments series. Not long after I had all of the Shadowhunter books on my shelves (The Infernal Devices, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, The Bane Chronicles etc.). I remember marathon reading the Mortal Instruments across the span of a month and all of the books blending together in my mind. I didn't even finish the last book because it just wasn't good. This series was so easily forgettable. The Mortal Instruments has bland writing and annoying characters and is just not very good in general. There! I said it! Months after reading these books, I still pretended like I loved them yet had no interest in picking up another Cassandra Clare book (which was unfortunate because I had all of them). I tried reading Lady Midnight not long ago and I just couldn't get into the book. What I did read, left no lasting impression on me and I am perfectly content to never pick up Lady Midnight again.

*SPOILERS FOR THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS AHEAD. PROCEED WITH CAUTION*

One thing that really irked me about these books was the incestuous behavior that occurred between Clary and Jace. I believe it was in the second book that they found out they were brother and sister. Then they made out. TWICE. They're excuse was, "it didn't feel wrong". BUT IT WAS. In the end they weren't brother and sister, but they believed they were and they made out. TWICE!! I could not get over how disgusting that was. I also found both Clary and Jace to be extremely annoying. Overall, I didn't like them separately and I hated them together.

Another issue, I have with the Mortal Instruments is, it was based off of Harry Potter Fanfiction that Cassandra Clare used to write. Clary and Jace are based off of Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley. All the characters in this book series were very stereotypical, over-done characters that I'd seen a hundred times before. The entire Mortal Instruments series is based off of another writers work and I don't agree with that. Especially when the Mortal Instruments is so popular and has had book to screen adaptations. It's unfair.

Now with that being said, I would like to talk about the Infernal Devices Trilogy. I absolutely love these books with all my heart. I love the characters and the setting and the plot. Everything about these books makes my heart jump with joy. They are, by far, the best books Cassandra Clare has ever written. My personal favourite is Clockwork Princess. I will forever and always support and cherish and love anything to do with these books, so if Cassandra Clare came out with another book relating to The Infernal Devices or special editions of these books, I would buy them. The Infernal Devices is my one and only exception. I will either be donating or selling the rest of my Cassandra Clare books.

Thankyou so much for reading. Please let me know if you enjoyed this post and I can do similar things in the future. I really enjoyed ranting.
